Are You Drinking Chlorinated Water? Chlorine is a disinfectant added to our city water supplies to keep us safe from bacteria, parasites, viruses, and other water borne ailments. Chlorine is highly effective as a disinfectant, but is it safe to drink? According to the EPA and other government agencies “legal limit” guidelines, it is. However, “legal limit” does not always equal safe, especially when many of those limits have not been updated for almost 20 years. A passing grade from the federal government does not always meet the latest health guidelines. In addition to Chlorine, many municipalities are now also adding Chloramine, a mixture of chlorine and ammonia, because it is more stable in water. Chlorine evaporates from water when exposed to air within about 24 hours, however Chloramines will remain stable in water for weeks. These and other chemicals are found in unfiltered drinking water.
