Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in the uterus and can cause symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure on the bladder or bowel. During a fibroid embolization procedure, an interventional radiologist inserts a thin catheter into the arteries that supply blood to the uterus. Using real-time imaging guidance, the radiologist guides the catheter to the uterine arteries and injects small particles, usually made of a material called polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), into the arteries. These particles block the blood flow to the fibroids, causing them to shrink and die off over time.  | |
