The thyroid gland is a little gland at the front of the neck that resembles a butterfly. It has two lobes that are joined by an isthmus, which is a thin band of thyroid tissue. The thyroid gland is structurally divided into tiny follicles that house the thyroid hormones. Triiodothyronine (T3), tetraiodothyronine (T4), and calcitonin are the three hormones that the thyroid gland will functionally produce. T3 and T4 are essential for growth and brain development in children as well as for controlling our metabolism. Contrarily, calcitonin is involved in controlling the metabolism of calcium and bones. Iodine is essential for the creation of thyroid hormones. It's interesting to note that we cannot produce this element, thus we must rely on our diet to supply it. | |
