Elsa Ortiz Online, LLC-Kids Closet

In 2018, Elsa Ortiz and her son Antony attempted to immigrate to the U.S., but their journey took a heartbreaking turn. Crossing the Texas border, they were apprehended by Border Patrol. A few days later, immigration agents separated Elsa from Antony, leaving her uncertain of his fate. Deported to Guatemala in shackles, Elsa faced an agonizing unknown.

In 2019, just days before embarking on our first vacation to Guatemala, we stumbled upon Elsa's story in the New York Times. Moved to action, we swiftly enlisted a pro-bono lawyer and, using social media, tracked down Elsa. Presenting legal documents for her to sign, we worked tirelessly to reunite her with Antony.

During the 81 days of separation, we formed a deep connection with Elsa, realizing the lack of hope and opportunity in her life. Motivated to make a difference, we established a wholesale/retail business in Albuquerque, NM, centred around Elsa as our buyer in Guatemala. She sourced handmade Mayan products, which we then sold in the U.S.

Naming our company after Elsa, we aimed to create employment opportunities and provide hope. Over the next four years, Elsa, Antony, and others who experienced similar family separations at the border were granted humanitarian visas by the U.S. government. Today, Elsa and Tony happily live, work, and study in Virginia.

Our commitment to fostering hope and opportunity persists. We support a second buyer and continuously expand our business to enhance its capacity to bring positive change to Guatemala.
