In a notable development today, the price of Ammonium Sulfate (Cooking Grade) has dropped by Rs 1.5/kg in the Ahmedabad chemical market.This sudden price correction has drawn attention from wholesalers, food ingredient manufacturers, and chemical distributors operating in western India. According to Indian Petrochemical analysts, prices were at Rs 44.5 per kg on Aug 05, 2025, as against Rs 46 per kg recorded on July 29. 1. Excess Domestic Supply: In the past two months, multiple small and mid-scale producers in Gujarat and Maharashtra have increased production capacities of Ammonium Sulfate, particularly the food-grade variant. This has led to a surplus in supply, causing downward pressure on prices. 2. Sluggish Demand from Food Industry: Post-monsoon slowdown in production cycles among food processors and bakeries—especially in tier-2 and tier-3 towns—has resulted in reduced offtake. Many end-users are working with existing inventories, leading to weaker demand in July and early August. 3. Price War Among Distributors : Amid rising competition, especially in Ahmedabad's Naroda, Vatva, and GIDC trading zones, many distributors have started offering discounted rates to liquidate excess inventory before the upcoming festive demand picks up. This is a strategic move to capture market share even at lower margins. 4. Stable International Benchmarks: Globally, food-grade Ammonium Sulfate is being traded around $180 to $190 per metric ton (equivalent to ₹14 to ₹16/kg after adding freight and import costs). However, since India currently relies mostly on domestic production for this grade, international benchmarks haven’t provided price support in the local market. 5. Regulatory Relaxations and Policy Adjustments: Temporary relaxation in import regulations and transport norms for food ingredients has enabled higher inter-state movement, which has in turn intensified the competition among regional suppliers.
