New Report Finds That Most Organizations Are Not Prepared for Ransomware Attacks

A recent study by the Ponemon Institute unveils a critical concern: almost half (45%) of healthcare providers affirm that ransomware attacks have led to heightened complications in medical procedures, a significant surge from 2021’s 36%. The report, “The impact of ransomware on patient safety and the value of cybersecurity benchmarking,” sponsored by Censinet, surveyed 579 healthcare IT professionals in Q4 of 2022, shedding light on the profound impact of ransomware on patient care.

The impact of ransomware in healthcare is deeply concerning, with over 20% of respondents highlighting its dire consequences on patient mortality rates. 70% reported a rise in patient transfers to other facilities, while a staggering 67% of organizations resorted to paying ransoms, witnessing an alarming increase in the average payment from $282,675 in 2021 to $352,541.
